I’m building a handheld device that lets me roll a ball across any flat surface and have it actively steer itself so the pen mounted inside draws in the exact direction I choose. An optical-flow sensor will read surface motion, my code will translate that into heading commands, and two small motors inside the ball will supply the corrective spin. The overall sketch is already under way, but I need a specialist who knows Arduino-style hardware and, more importantly, how to marry miniature motors with an ESP32-C module for precise directional control of the ball. Your main focus will be advising on the right motor format, driver circuitry, power budgeting, and the physical/electrical integration so the firmware can call simple functions like setHeading() or setVelocity(). I’m comfortable writing and iterating the code itself once the hardware layer is solid. Key deliverables • Recommend readily available, lightweight motors (plus drivers) that can fit in a ~40 mm sphere and still deliver smooth bidirectional torque. • Provide wiring diagrams and pinouts showing clean integration with the ESP32-C and the optical-flow sensor. • Validate the control approach: PWM timing, current limits, encoder or hall feedback if it improves accuracy. • Offer test routines I can flash to prove the motors respond correctly before I fold them into the main sketch. If you have prior experience putting steppers, tiny DC gear motors, or servos inside toys, robots, or art installations, that insight will be invaluable here.
