Australian Legal Academic or Constitutional/Human Rights Lawyer to Co-Develop Two Journal Articles Description I am seeking an appropriately qualified legal academic, researcher or practitioner to assist in completing and preparing two substantial legal papers for submission to peer-reviewed law journals. The manuscripts are already well developed and contain original jurisprudential frameworks. The work is not a general content-writing assignment. It requires rigorous legal research, critical analysis, source verification and publication-level revision. The papers concern: Australian constitutional law and democratic legitimacy, examining whether constitutional and common-law principles support an ongoing citizen corrective mechanism; and Anti-discrimination and equality law, examining the historical jurisprudence of protected attributes, the recognition of gender identity, conflicts between protected characteristics and a proposed Reciprocal Equality Principle. Scope of work The successful applicant will be expected to: critically review the existing manuscripts and identify doctrinal, structural and evidentiary weaknesses; strengthen the analysis using Australian constitutional, discrimination and human-rights law; verify all legislation, cases, parliamentary materials and academic authorities; undertake further primary and secondary legal research; deepen engagement with competing scholarly perspectives; refine the original jurisprudential frameworks and ensure that their claims are properly supported; edit the manuscripts to publication standard; convert references and footnotes to AGLC4; recommend appropriate journals and adapt each manuscript to the selected journal’s requirements; assist with submission materials and, if required, responses to peer-review comments. Additionally: - Provide up to 3 shortlisted candidates an hour each per paper (2 hours total) to review both manuscripts. Candidates will provide feedback on their suitability for the project along with estimated timelines for completion. - Ensure Intellectual Property (IP) ownership is transferred upon project completion. - Be open to acting as a coauthor if contributions meet authorship criteria. Required qualifications Applicants should have: an LLB, JD, LLM, PhD or equivalent legal qualification; demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following: Australian constitutional law; human rights law; anti-discrimination or equality law; jurisprudence or legal theory; public law; previous experience preparing articles for peer-reviewed legal journals; excellent doctrinal research and academic writing skills; familiarity with AGLC4; the ability to engage impartially and rigorously with legally and politically contested questions. Highly desirable a PhD in law, current doctoral candidature or academic appointment; previous peer-reviewed legal publications; knowledge of Australian constitutional and discrimination jurisprudence; experience responding to journal peer review; access to legal research databases such as Westlaw, LexisNexis or HeinOnline. Authorship I am open to the successful applicant becoming a named co-author, provided their contribution is sufficiently substantial to satisfy the authorship requirements of the selected journal. This would require meaningful intellectual contribution, critical drafting or revision, approval of the final manuscripts and willingness to accept responsibility for the published work. Applicants who provide editing or research assistance without meeting authorship criteria would instead be appropriately acknowledged.
