I’m commissioning a minimum-20-page graphic novel, laid out in multiple panels per page, illustrated in a realistic style that still feels lush and dreamlike. The narrative follows my small toddler son (no older than three) and a towering, Blackbeard-inspired captain—6’5”, about 300 lbs, wild beard and faux-hawk—after we discover a message in a bottle on a Puerto Rican beach during our family vacation. The bottle’s spell hurls the three of us (Dad, Mom—an emo-goth with cropped hair and blue eyes—and baby) back through time to a mystical, golden-age Caribbean. Throughout the voyage the art must showcase Puerto Rico’s natural landscapes: jade waterfalls draped in mist, the unmistakable silhouette of a ceiba tree, scarlet flamboyan blooms, groves alive with singing coquí, and turquoise coves patrolled by gentle manatees. At sea we meet alluring sirens, and the treasure we hunt is defended by a colossal kraken-like creature whose tentacles dwarf the captain’s ship. Tone stays mystical and awe-filled rather than slapstick; visuals should keep adult readers engaged even though the plot itself remains child-friendly.
